Thanks for the tip guys, you really make things seem so simple, now to hit the lanes and try this about 1,000 times lol. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your day. ❤✌
Thanks for the kind words! Stay safe and healthy!
Great tips, guys. I need to practice the no step and one step drills more often. I tend to leave a lot of corner pins.
🙄
For league bowlers that don’t have a big arsenal this is huge. Last night at league I started out ringing ten pins and left a 9 pin. I needed to take a little bit out of my wrist and I started having much better pin carry and finished the night with a 747. If I don’t make that adjustment I’m frustrated all night. Great tip guys!!
Great job on the lanes! Thanks for watching! Keep up the great work.
22 years ago I shot my personal high game 270 in a situation where I had to take my hand out of it as much as possible. It was on very dry wood lanes. I don’t have trouble making the ball crank, but my speed was not up where it should be, and on a dry lane I had no shot. I used my storm spare ball for a strike ball and rolled it with as little hook as possible and my shot hooked less than Shannon’s first ball in the video. It was actually a no tap tournament, but my 270 was natural because I left no 10 pins. And I didn’t finish in the money because other better bowlers benefited from a few free 10 pins. I never bowled that way again though, it was just an emergency measure. Trying to deliberately make less than 10 boards of hook takes all the fun out of it for me. I never got within 20 pins of 270 again either … I’ll have to fix that.
This old guy in my league, told me about oil patterns. The only sport/game where you’ll get pointers from openents. I ended up throwing 5 strikes in a row. After that he said he should t have said anything😂😂
Shannon is a great coach and you can tell it KILLS her not to speak in these videos! 😂
🤣
She does bowling tips in Tuesday. They are short vids, 2-3 minutes long
Another great video. This and increasing my axis tilt are my two priorities to practice once my state (Washington) opens the lanes back up. I used to have a side biscuit throw with high tilt, high rotation, and slower speed. Found out I had a weak wrist and went to a wrist brace which stabilizes my hand but causes me to throw more up the back up the ball.
Try not to get used to the brace, because it makes you dependant on it
Shannon is an excellent bowler. I bowled with her at a pro-am in New Jersey. I know I have to work on my approach and release, however, with this covid deal, it’s hard to get into the alleys! Also, today’s bowling alleys cater to families and it’s hard to practice with little kids running up to the approach and into your lane. There is very little quiet time at the lanes. Perhaps after the covid dies down, and the kids are really back to school, I might find the time to practice.
Hope you get back on the lanes soon when it is safe to do so!
Yep, They are creating Fun Centers now days
I was concerned because I was asked to sub on a team tonight. I have been in a slump over the last month (was at a 200 average, now 196). However, I struck a lot more today and finally rolled a 600 series because of this tip.
Glad to hear it!
Good Video on the drill, allow me to add more important info about this.
If you want to throw more strikes, it is NOT just about creating more AXIS rotation, this will not guarantee you to get more strikes. This is because some bowlers already have too much axis rotation, especially those with a heavy hand and a lot of revs, like two-handed bowlers.
Moreover, you can get a lot of strikes with a low track like Shannon showed in this video when she left the 10 pin, all you have to do is to adjust your feet or maybe make a ball change, or a speed change.
The KEY to ALWAYS keep in mind is to try to get the ball to consistently go through the pins at an angle that will allow it the ball to die in the middle. In other words, you want to see a “flush” strike reaction when your ball hit the pins.
PLUS, you also have to keep in mind what bowling ball you are using and what oil pattern you are bowling on. There are just so many variables that you have to keep in mind and learn to watch and control if you really want to get better and start throwing more strikes.
Questions? I’m happy to answer here 🙂
(I also replied this first paragraph elsewhere). 22 years ago I shot my personal high game 270 in a situation where I had to take my hand out of it as much as possible. It was on very dry wood lanes. I haven’t bowled since 2003. I got tired of fighting dry lanes, and houses that catered to bowlers that complained if there was any oil, because they can’t crank it and want to hook like they can. I was in a league where suddenly there was real oil out there one week, and I was loving it while the rest of them grumbled. There was real oil the next week too, and I overheard guys grumbling that they suspected the house was catering to me. Then the next week after that it was dry again. I talked to the owner and he told me he mistakenly set his machine to apply oil in both directions, causing the machine to apply double oil, and it took him 2 weeks to notice the mistake.
Anyway I’m retired now, the game has changed, and I want to start again. I’m going to look for a pro shop that can help me locate my PAP and explore what the latest ball technology has to offer, and see if there’s a house around me that will apply some oil.
To the people stating the two shots were on different parts of the lane. Yes, that is true. However, the point of the video is that changing the hand position at the release point creates a different angle to the pocket. If your carry isn’t where you want it to be, try changing the hand position. Great video!
I just want to look like less of an idiot in front of my friends.

Now I want to know
I’m back! The reason you see a lot of nine-pins on high flush hits by right handlers is not that the ball hooks past the nine-pin. It is because the sharp entry angle of resin balls makes the 1-3 pocket wider. If you don’t believe me look at the pocket on the lane just to your left. The pocket looks wider than the one on your lane. This is approximately what a sharp hooking ball sees when it hits the pocket. The nine-pin stays up because the ball deflects to the left off the right side of the three-pin, not because it continues to hook left. The key to carrying the nine-pin on a high flush hit is to have less entry angle, so the ball does not deflect to the left after hitting the three-pin.
For my fellow novice/recreational bowlers: What I do is grab the lightest ball with the smallest holes that the place has. Barely put your finger tips in the holes, and leave your thumb out. Line up to release as close to the right side of the lane as possible (or left if you’re a lefty). Curl your wrist, and release the ball as hard as you can- while you release flip your hand to create spin, to where it curves right into the pocket. Try to release as close to the floor as possible. Sounds stupid, but with a little practice it’s a solid technique.
Same here
Actually going opposite to which hand you use is better for hooking
I just tried this twice and got a strike on the second time!
Thanks~
I just had reconstructive surgery on my left shoulder on the 3rd of June. Last weekend I went bowling and had 9 strikes in a row and was super surprised. Still learning the curve more to be more consistent
Wow that’s amazing. I’ve never had surgery on any of my shoulders, and I went bowling 2 days ago and didn’t get any strikes. I did get 101 points though. (That’s good for me)
@Rapid Reactions try getting reconstructive surgery on your left shoulder, I think that might help!
Who else is watching this before bowling

I’m watching it during

Lol
Mrs. O’Keefe’s first shot was inside (for her shot and ball) and went over the third arrow where it didn’t get enough hook so was going too straight. While the second shot went over the 12 board and was further right where it hooks more. That probably had more effect than changing the axis tilt.
I went bowling with a couple of friends and we all suck at bowling.
We weren’t battling for 1st place.
All of our goals were to not get last place.
Now with the help with this video, hopefully it helps keep me away from last place.
No one asked🤣
@The_manmeee I did wdym
@The_manmeee they did ask + we do care + ratio
@The_manmeee get ratio’d
If you’re no good at bowling, this isn’t really a good tip for you. This tip is more for people who are able to line up and hit the pocket consistently. You should have a basic set of fundamentals in place before trying to adjust hand position between shots.
This is so awesome for pre bowling practice!
I think after playing for more than 1 month now best tip I can give to beginners like me going straight bowling when gripping the ball grip it tightly place your thumbs all the way down this gives you the grip to go straight, when reaching the foul line remember to arm straight until the end and most important of them all never look at the pins when bowling always look at the arrows before you even bowl look at the arrow you want your ball to hit and ain your ball there. Never ever look at the pins !
Shannon is great to watch and learn from.
I think there’s a weight on the bottom of each pin so that they don’t just fall over too easily, if they were very light and didn’t weigh very much it would be super easy for them to all fall down
